Side business scenario
How to start an Etsy shop while you keep your day job
Quick answer
To start an Etsy shop with a day job, open with a few finished pieces, price each to cover Etsy's fees and your admin time, and set a processing time you can keep around work. Most people who sell on Etsy don't do it as their only job: in Etsy's 2024 seller survey, only 29% called it their sole occupation.
Where you're starting from
This page is for one situation: you make something by hand, pottery in our example, you have a full-time job, and you want to sell your work on Etsy without quitting. Here is what that involves, from the sources.
-
Who sells on Etsy
- Etsy had 5.6 million active sellers and 86.5 million active buyers at the end of 2025. An active seller is one with a charge or a sale in the last 12 months.
- In Etsy's 2024 Seller Census, 89% of sellers were businesses of one, and 97% ran their business from home.
- Only 29% said their creative business, on and off Etsy, was their sole occupation, and 38% used its income to cover household expenses like bills, rent and food.
-
What Etsy charges for
- Etsy earns most of its marketplace revenue from transaction fees (offsite advertising included), payment processing fees and listing fees.
- In 2024 it added a seller set-up fee, which it says was meant to encourage a higher standard of seller commitment.
- On-site ads and shipping labels are optional services that cost extra.
- Sellers spend 52% of their business time, on average, making or designing, and the rest on administrative tasks.
-
Tax on side sales
- A part-time business counts as self-employment, and self-employed people generally pay self-employment tax as well as income tax.
- You have to file a tax return once your net earnings from self-employment reach $400.
Checked October 23, 2026. Etsy filed its annual report with the Securities and Exchange Commission on February 19, 2026; the seller figures come from its 2024 Seller Census. The amounts of each fee are on Etsy's Fees & Payments Policy. For tax questions, ask an accountant or a tax professional.

What usually goes wrong
A shop run around a job tends to stall in the same few places. These are the common ones.
-
The price leaves out the fees and the admin.
Each sale carries a transaction fee and a payment processing fee, each listing has a fee of its own, and on-site ads and shipping labels cost extra if you use them, according to Etsy's annual report. Then there's your time: in Etsy's 2024 survey, sellers spent 52% of their business hours making or designing and the rest on administrative tasks. Price from today's amounts on Etsy's fee page, and count the admin hours as work.
-
The shipping promise only works on a free weekend.
The Federal Trade Commission's mail order rule covers internet orders. You need a reasonable basis for the shipping time you state, or for shipping within 30 days if you state none. If you can't ship on time, you have to get the buyer's consent to the delay, with a new date and the choice to cancel for a full refund, or promptly refund the money. Set a processing time that fits your weekday evenings.
-
Tax waits for a form that never comes.
A marketplace sends a Form 1099-K when the payments you received top $20,000 in more than 200 transactions, so a smaller shop won't get one. The Internal Revenue Service says to report your income either way. Keep a sheet of every sale and every cost from the first order, and ask an accountant what to set aside.
Sources checked October 23, 2026. The Federal Trade Commission's guide was last edited in January 2025, and the Form 1099-K page was last reviewed on June 28, 2026. Fees change, so confirm the amounts on Etsy's own pages before you price.
How LeapSteps helps
LeapSteps puts the shop's next step on the same list as your workday: a milestone months out, a step for the coming weeks and one task for tonight.
Example goal
- Long-termSell my handmade pottery on Etsy alongside my day job
- Mid-termMake my first 20 sales by spring
- Short-termPrice and photograph my first five pieces
Today's taskWrite down every fee on Etsy's fee page
We wrote this example ourselves. In LeapSteps you write the long-term goal in your own words. Tap Generate on the mid-term or short-term step and AI drafts three options; keep one, edit it or write your own.
The screenshot is the app's draft for this goal, with its first option for each step kept as generated. It made ten listings the May milestone and started with photos and titles for five pieces. Our example counts sales instead of listings, because sales tell you whether the prices work, and puts pricing in the first step, because the fees and the admin hours decide what each piece has to cost.
Then link this week's tasks to the short-term step. They sit on Today next to your work tasks, and a task that ends in a weekday, like "Ship the blue mug order Thursday", is due that day. Late tasks stay on Today and show how late they are, so a week of overtime doesn't lose the shop. When the first five pieces are listed, tap Done on the step: it moves to Steps achieved, and you can tap Generate for the next one. For licenses and insurance, our plan to start a cleaning business walks through what a business on the side has to check.
Your first week, in seven short tasks
Each takes 30 minutes or less, so they fit around a workday. None of them opens the shop yet.
- Read Etsy's fee page and list every fee20 min Each sale carries a transaction fee and a payment processing fee, and each listing has its own, so they all belong in the price.
- Price one piece with fees, materials and your time30 min Count clay, glaze, firing and packing. Sellers spend about half their business time on admin, so pay yourself for those hours too.
- Photograph five finished pieces in daylight30 min The app's draft starts here too. Shoot them on the same day, so your first listings look like one shop.
- Pick a processing time you can keep on workdays10 min The mail order rule holds you to the shipping time you state, or to 30 days if you state none.
- Draft titles and descriptions for the five pieces30 min Give the size, the color and how to care for each one, so buyers don't have to message you to ask.
- Start a sheet for every sale and every cost15 min You report the income whether or not a Form 1099-K arrives, and the costs show what you really earned.
- Check your city's rules for a home business20 min Licenses depend on what you sell and where you live, and zoning can apply to a business run from home.
In LeapSteps, add each one in a few words and link it to the goal's short-term step, so the week's work shows under the goal it serves.
Questions, answered
Can I run an Etsy shop while working full time?
Yes, and most sellers don't do it as their only job. In Etsy's 2024 Seller Census, reported in its annual report for 2025, only 29% of sellers said their creative business was their sole occupation, 89% were businesses of one and 97% ran their business from home. The squeeze is time: sellers spent 52% of their business hours making or designing and the rest on administrative tasks. So plan the admin as tasks of its own, like photos, listings and packing, and set a processing time you can keep on weekdays. Under the Federal Trade Commission's mail order rule, you need a reasonable basis for the shipping time you state, or for 30 days if you state none.
Do I need a business license to sell on Etsy?
It depends on what you sell and where you live. The U.S. Small Business Administration says licenses and permits depend on your business activity and location, and your state, county and city may each have rules of their own. It also says zoning ordinances can still apply to home-based businesses, so a studio in the garage may need a look from your city. Check your state's business site and your city or county office before your first sale, and ask whether your product needs anything extra. A shop on Etsy doesn't change any of this: the marketplace gives you the storefront, and the licenses are between you and your local government.
Do I have to pay taxes on Etsy sales?
Yes, if you earn from them. The Internal Revenue Service counts a part-time business as self-employment, and self-employed people generally pay self-employment tax as well as income tax. You have to file a return once your net earnings from self-employment reach $400. A marketplace sends a Form 1099-K when the payments you received for goods or services top $20,000 in more than 200 transactions, but the IRS says to report your income whether or not you get one. Keep a sheet of every sale and every cost from the first order, so the numbers are ready at tax time. What you'll owe, and what you can deduct, is a question for an accountant or a tax professional.
Can LeapSteps plan my Etsy shop?
It keeps the shop moving; the decisions stay yours. LeapSteps is our app. Write the shop as the long-term goal, then tap Generate on the mid-term or short-term step for three AI-drafted options, or write your own. You can give it an area of focus, like "pricing" or "listings". LeapSteps doesn't know Etsy's current fees, your city's license rules or what your materials cost, so check those with the sources on this page, and it doesn't set your prices. What it does is keep this week's shop tasks on the same list as your work, and move each finished step to Steps achieved, which helps in the weeks when the day job takes most of your evenings.
