How to get PMP certified while you work full time

By the LeapSteps team. Updated . Facts checked .

Quick answer

To sit the Project Management Professional (PMP) exam, you need project experience (three years with a bachelor's degree, five with a high school diploma, within the last 10 years) and 35 hours of training. Log your projects month by month before you apply, then plan for a four-hour, 180-question exam you have a year to pass.

Where you're starting from

This page is for one situation: you run projects at work, maybe without the title, say as a site coordinator for a builder, and you want PMP certification without cutting back your hours. Here is what the Project Management Institute (PMI) asks, from the sources.

  • Who can apply

    • You need one of four mixes of education and experience managing projects: a high school diploma and five years, an associate's degree or vocational diploma and four years, a bachelor's degree or higher and three years, or a degree from a PMI-accredited program and two years.
    • The experience has to fall within the last 10 years, and months when projects overlapped count once.
    • You also need 35 hours of project management training, or an active Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) certification.

  • The exam since July 2026

    • PMI updated the exam on July 9, 2026. It still has 180 questions, now in 240 minutes with two 10-minute breaks.
    • You take it at a Pearson VUE test center or online.
    • The weighting moved: People went from 42% to 33%, Process from 50% to 41%, and Business Environment from 8% to 26%.

  • The work you're aiming at

    • Project management specialists held about 1.1 million jobs in 2025, and construction employed 22% of them.
    • Their median pay was $102,320 a year in May 2025, and about 76,500 openings are projected each year from 2025 to 2035.
    • Certification isn't always required, but it may be beneficial.
    U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics

What usually goes wrong

Around a full-time job, the plan tends to stall in the paperwork, before the studying starts. These are the common ways.

  • The months don't add up.

PMI counts experience in months, not projects, and only within the last 10 years. When projects overlap, the shared months count once: in PMI's own example, a project from January to March and another from February to May add up to five months, not seven. Routine operations and admin don't count, and neither do school projects or home improvement. Map every project by month before you write the application.

  • The audit asks for proof you didn't keep.

PMI picks a share of applications at random for audit, and you then have 90 days to send proof, according to its certification FAQ. Each project needs someone who knew it well to verify it: a colleague, peer, client or sponsor. Each course needs a certificate, or a letter on company letterhead for an in-house course; a receipt or a course roster isn't accepted. Line up a reference for each project, and keep each certificate, as you go.

  • The one-year clock runs out.

Your application is valid for one year from approval, and you can take the exam up to three times in that year. If it lapses, you apply again. So apply when your study plan fits inside that year, rather than the week you finish your course.

  • The live class you paid for no longer counts.

From December 1, 2026, PMI accepts live training hours only from a PMI Authorized Training Partner, a China Registered Education Provider or an eligible accredited academic program. Self-paced courses from any provider still count, and training you finish before December 1 counts under the current rules. Check the provider before you pay.

How LeapSteps helps

LeapSteps keeps your PMP certification plan on the same list as the projects you're running. The goal gets a milestone months out, a step for the coming weeks and a task for today.

Example goal

  1. Long-termPass the PMP exam while working full time
  2. Mid-termSend my PMP application by the end of January
  3. Short-termMap my projects from the last 10 years by month

Today's taskList every project I've run since 2016 with its start and end month

We wrote this example ourselves. In LeapSteps you write the long-term goal in your own words. Tap Generate on the mid-term or short-term step and AI drafts three options; keep one, edit it or write your own.

The goal screen in LeapSteps with the AI draft as generated. Long-term goal: Pass the PMP exam while working full time. Mid-term goal: Complete 35 hours of PMP exam-prep study while working full time, with at least 3 full-length practice exams scoring 70% or higher, by Apr 23, 2027. Short-term goal: Schedule 3 PMP study blocks of 45 minutes each on your calendar this week, by Oct 30, 2026.

The screenshot is the app's draft for this goal, with its first option for each step kept as generated. It went straight to studying: 35 hours of prep and three practice exams by April, starting with three 45-minute study blocks this week. Our example puts the application first. PMI's 35 hours are training you finish before you apply, and you pay for and book the exam only once PMI accepts your application. The draft's 70% practice score is the app's own suggestion and doesn't come from PMI.

Then link this week's tasks to the short-term step. They sit on Today next to your work tasks, and a task that ends in a weekday, like "Ask Dana to be my reference Thursday", is due that day. Late tasks stay on Today and show how late they are, so a deadline week at work doesn't lose the plan. When the application is in, tap Done on the step: it moves to Steps achieved, and you can tap Generate for the study plan. For the studying itself, our plan for studying for finals builds on practice tests and spaced review.

Your first week, in seven short tasks

Each takes 30 minutes or less, so they fit into a lunch break or an evening. None of them commits you to an exam date yet.

  1. Check which experience rule applies to you10 min Three years with a bachelor's degree, four with an associate's, five with a high school diploma, all within the last 10 years.
  2. List every project you've run since 2016, by month30 min PMI counts months, not projects, and months when two projects overlapped count only once.
  3. Cross out the routine work15 min Ongoing operations and admin tasks don't count as project experience, however busy they kept you.
  4. Name someone who can verify each project15 min If you're audited, a colleague, peer, client or sponsor who knew the project has to confirm it, within 90 days.
  5. Find the certificate for each course you've taken15 min An audit accepts certificates or a letter on company letterhead, not receipts or course rosters.
  6. Pick a course for your 35 training hours30 min From December 1, 2026, live classes count only from approved providers; self-paced courses count from any provider.
  7. Block three study sessions on your calendar10 min The app's draft starts here. Put them at times a meeting is least likely to take.

In LeapSteps, add each one in a few words and link it to the goal's short-term step, so the week's work shows under the goal it serves.

Questions, answered

Can I get PMP certification without a project manager title?

Yes. PMI says the work matters more than the title: a project coordinator, operations lead or team lead may qualify if they can show they led and directed project work. It has to be professional work on something with a defined objective, a beginning and an end. Routine operations, school projects, personal events and home improvement don't count. Experience is measured in months within the last 10 years, so two overlapping projects share their months. With a bachelor's degree you need three years of it, with an associate's degree four, and with a high school diploma five. If you're short, PMI suggests the Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) as a starting point.

How long is the PMP exam now?

Four hours. Since PMI updated the exam on July 9, 2026, it has 180 questions in 240 minutes, with two 10-minute breaks, and you can take it at a Pearson VUE test center or online. PMI says the scoring method hasn't changed, but the weighting has: Business Environment rose from 8% to 26% of the exam, while People fell from 42% to 33% and Process from 50% to 41%. PMI also says the core principles are the same, so prep materials written for the older exam still help. Just give Business Environment a bigger share of your study time than they do.

What happens if my PMP application is audited?

You send proof of what you claimed. PMI picks a share of applications at random to confirm the experience and education on them. You don't send documents with the application, but if you're picked you have 90 days to complete the audit package in your PMI dashboard. Each project is verified by someone with close knowledge of it: a colleague, peer, client or sponsor. For training, PMI accepts a certificate, or for an in-house course a letter from the course administrator, HR or your manager on company letterhead; a receipt or roster isn't enough. PMI says it processes audit materials within 5 to 7 business days. If you choose not to finish the audit, it counts as failed, and you can reapply after a year.

Can LeapSteps help me study for the PMP exam?

It keeps the studying on your calendar; the content comes from your course. LeapSteps is our app. Write the PMP exam as the long-term goal, then tap Generate on the mid-term or short-term step for three AI-drafted options, or write your own. You can give it an area of focus, like "application" or "practice exams". LeapSteps doesn't know PMI's rules, your project history or what's on the exam, so check those with PMI, and it doesn't teach the material or grade practice tests. What it does is keep this week's study tasks on the same list as your work, and move each finished step to Steps achieved, which helps in the months between the course and exam day.
